I (Josh Wade) have a huge affinity for The Cork District. It was in 2010 that creator Michael Allen and I met in the lobby of the Davenport Hotel to discuss his idea of branding the downtown core as a Cork District. Capitalizing on a growing urban wine scene this concept would give a sense of place and identity to the area and would serve as a launching point for getting the word out about Spokane’s award winning wineries. His idea was brilliant! While it took a while to launch – I believe it got off the ground in 2013 – Nectar was on board from the beginning.
While Nectar is no longer officially a member of The Cork District we are proud to continue representing Washington wine and the continued growth of the downtown wine scene. Since our original launch as Nectar Tasting Room we have seen a half a dozen wineries come and go into the downtown Spokane area. The last 12 months has seen a huge surge in tasting rooms for wine lovers to enjoy. This year alone we have seen 4 new tasting rooms open in downtown, one winery move to a new facility in Liberty Lake and one brand new winery, Winescape, that is set to open it’s doors November 18.
Nectar continues to offer wine tasting from Noon to 6pm Tuesday through Sunday from our Featured Winery of the Month program. This allows visitors to Spokane and residents to taste something new from one of the 900 wineries in our state. For November our Featured Winery is Tamarack Cellars from Walla Walla and in December we will feature K Vintners, also from Walla Walla. Out and about tasting at one of the 19 Cork District wineries? Put Nectar on your list too!
CORK DISTRICT CONTINUES GROWTH
Let’s take a look at the newcomers to the growing Spokane wine scene:
TERRA BLANCA WINERY: Terra Blanca was one of the original partner wineries at Nectar Tasting Room. Owners Keith and ReNae Pilgrim are long time residents in the Red Mountain AVA and saw the potential in Spokane. They are located at 926 W. Sprague Ave
HELIX WINES: Helix is a second brand for Walla Walla’s Reininger Winery. The brand was created as a way to explore grapes produced in other areas outside of Walla Walla. Visitors should expect quality bold reds. They are located at 824 W. Sprague Ave
TEMPUS CELLARS: Tempus Cellars is a project of winemaker Joe Forest. Joe has worked at Seven Hills and Dunham and is currently the winemaker at Patit Creek Cellars (also in The Cork District). Visitors can expect primarily red wines in the $25-$40 price range. They are located at 8 N. Post St
MARYHILL WINERY: Maryhill Winery is one of Washington’s most notorious and largest wineries. Located in Goldendale WA and owned and operated by Spokane natives Craig and Vicki Leuthold, Maryhill is opening a grand tasting facility in Kendall Yards, WA (right next door to Nectar Wine and Beer). We are excited to welcome this highly acclaimed and perennial award winning winery to Spokane. They are located at 1303 W. Summit Parkway
WINESCAPE WINERY: Winescape is the newest addition to the growing list of Spokane based wine producers. Winery owner Pat Butterfield says the location is perfect. Close to the city but just far enough out to give the country feel. They are located at 6011 E 32 Ave
