Over a century ago the shores of the Columbia river were considered one of the greatest grape growing spots in all of Washington. With the building of the Grand Coulee Dam Washington’s largest lake was created. Lake Roosevelt buried all those vineyards under several feet of water. Walter and Judy Haig, with the help of WSU Viticulture, resurrected the vision of quality Bordeaux grapes in the area in 1992. 1996 produced their first harvest with all the grapes being sold to fine wineries in Walla Walla. Over the years Walter and Judy, along with their son Michael began making their own wine and in 2005 stopped selling the Lake Roosevelt grapes to other wineries to focus exclusively on their own production.
Lake Roosevelt Wine Company, formerly Whitestone Winery after the large white rock overlooking the vineyards, focuses exclusively on 3 primary Bordeaux varieties Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet. In addition to these single variety wines winemaker Michael Haig makes a series of “Pieces” blends that club members and customers love. Available year round is the Pieces of Red. In addition is the Love you to Pieces (Valentines), Scared to Pieces (Halloween) and the Pieces on Earth (Christmas).
For Lake Roosevelt Wine Company’s tenure as a Nectar Featured Winery Michael has bottled a special and exclusive wine only available at Nectar. This wine will be available all month for only $18.99 and is a very limited quantity. Case discounts are available at 10%. There will be an exclusive release party of this wine on Saturday, April 15 from 4-6pm. Complimentary appetizers will be served (while they last) and the wine will be available for tasting.
In addition to the exclusive release event we will have winemaker Michael on hand for First Friday (April 7) with music from Sam Leyde and a new art display from Nanci Wolfe.
Join us Saturday, April 29 for a fun Paella feast with Michael as well. A tradition at Lake Roosevelt is Michael’s Paella and wine while overlooking the lake. We can’t bring the lake to you but we are bringing the Paella. Michael will make the delicious feast on our patio. Guests will arrive at 5pm for a wine tasting with Dr. Andy while the delicious pan of Paella finishes cooking. We will all gather in the main room for a feast. The event is $35 and includes light appetizers, wine tasting, salad, and the Paella. Additional wine will be available to purchase. Get your tickets now!
