When you visit the Hedges Family Estate Chateau in theĀ  heart of the Red Mountain AVA you feel transported to another time and place very reminiscent of Bordeaux and old world French wine tradition. That sense of place, history and tradition stems from Tom and Ann-Marie’s love story for each other and wine. Their story begins in 1975 as Tom was travelling Mexico where Ann-Marie was attending school. They married a year later in 12th century church in Champagne, France.

Hedges Family Estate Chateau on the Red Mountain

In 1989 they move back to Tom’s home state and purchase 50 acres of land on what is now known as the Red Mountain and plant 40 acres of Bordeaux grapes. As their story continued they raised two children Christophe and Sarah. Both are with the winery today, Christophe as General Manager and Sarah as the head wine maker.

Many people are familiar with Hedges for their brand CMS. The CMS brand of wines consists of Sauvignon Blanc and the popular red blend of which it derives its name, Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah. Total production of these two wines hovers around 40,000 cases each year. The Hedges CMS is one of the wines that I (Josh, the owner) have been drinking since the early days of wine blogging. For $10-12 it is easily one of the best drinking red wines at that price.

Hedges Family Estate, however, is far more than CMS. With certified Biodynamic Agriculture they produce high quality estate Syrah, Cabernet, blends and more.
